Birthday Eve

Well, here it is, my birthday eve. I figure for tonight I will discuss one of my favorite southern sayings, "over yonder". Basically it means over there - for those of you who don't speak southern. I have a favorite story to accompany this saying.

It was the summer of my 8th grade year, most of the girls in my family were vacationing in Panama City Beach, Florida that year. It was one of our last nights there, we were out souvenir shopping. We stopped in at Salty Dog to by the classic T-shirts. A store clerk w/ a British accent was helping all of us find our treasures, when my aunt turned to say, "Kasey, look at the one over yonder." The store clerk burst out laughing, and began quizzing my aunt on what 'over yonder' meant. He stated he had never heard this and inquired about other southern sayings. It makes me smile everything I hear the words "over yonder" because it reminds me of this story.

Do you all have any southern sayings of your own that are special?

Comments:
My favorite has always been "used to could." As in: "Do you play the piano?" "No, but I used to could!" Love it! And actually my family always says it more like "usta cud." Hey, we are from Alabama, you know!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm. Used to could is one of my favorites, too.

I think my favorite is "Tell ya what." I remember my granddad talking about how you could have an entire conversation with just that phrase. For example, on a hot day, you can walk up to someone wiping their forehead and say, "Tell ya what..." and the other person will know what you mean.

i like "usta cud", too, but i think i really like "is that any count?" as in "is that any good?" no one ever knows what i'm talking about unless they've lived in columbia/maury county!

My grandmother would say the locations of places (mainly stores) in the plural. As in: "Lets go down to the Wal-Marts", or "gotta go to the Krogers", even though there was only one of each. Also when I went to her house I did not get a Coke, or a soda, or (God forbid) a pop. I got a so-dee. Don't know if that's the correct spelling. Never asked. Happy birthday (late) by the way.
